Introduction to the Digital Humanities

is a 2-day TEQIP III Workshop for digital humanists and dh-curious faculty and research students primarily from TEQIP-mapped institutions. Organised by the Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, under the aegis of IIT Guwahati’s Centre for Education Technology and sponsored by the Government of India's TEQIP scheme, the workshop will be conducted by in-house trainers from the Departments of Computer Science, Design and Humanities and Social Sciences. The 2-day workshop aims to provide participants with an introduction to the vibrant field of digital humanities. It will reveal project and teaching possibilities, discuss theoretical positions about dealing with technological interventions in the humanities, introduce cutting edge software, standards, and best practices and offer basic literacy in specific software and languages with limited hands-on experience.

Course Content

The workshop will offer participants, through case studies and demonstrations, insights into ways in which humanists can collaborate with computational scientists to generate meaningful knowledge about their object of study. Pedagogy sessions would be coupled with time dedicated to hands-on experience with software demonstrated by experts. Examples include but are not restricted to: TEI-XML (with basic HTML), digital metadata generation for content management and OpenRefine (free, open source data cleanup software), Tableau Public (free, open source data visualization software) and Omeka (free, open source platform for publishing digital collections on the web) basics.
